La Maison Maire Moire, now integrated into Établissements Claeys, is one of the last remaining workshops to safeguard the exceptional savoir-faire of master moiré artisans..

Passed down through 5 generations, the intricate movements of Moire fabric cannot be fully mechanized and require years of experience.

A craft that Guillaume Maire learned from his father and is now dedicated to passing on.

Manufacturing

The adventure began^eat the end of the 19th century. The company Maire Moire, founded by great-granduncle Auguste Maire, was established in Lyon, in the Brotteaux district.

Specialized in Moire since its inception, the company performed this mechanical textile finishing on silk for both upholstery fabrics and haute couture ready-to-wear. At the time, the moiré effect was achieved using a massive 35-ton stone.

The pressure from the weight and the back-and-forth motions cause the fabric compression and fiber tension that create the shimmering patterns characteristic of Moire fabric.

Moire fabric patterns

LIBRE

Le mouvement de la Moire Libre est créé et contrôlé manuellement par l'opération du dressage. La répartition irrégulière et harmonieuse de la vibration moirée sur le tissu offre une singularité à chaque mètre.

TRACÉE

La Moire Tracée demande une préparation manuelle suivie par l'utilisation d'une règle en bois gravée pour ordonner la vibration en rayures verticales. La taille du dessin peut évoluer selon la règle choisie.

GALOCHE

Dessin dont l'aspect est obtenu par une déformation des fils pendant le tissage.

DOSSÉE

La Moire Dossée consiste à plier le tissu en son centre. L'étoffe est dressée à la main pour apporter le dessin et ensuite la calandrer. On réouvre ensuite le tissu, le dessin de Moire présente ensuite une symétrie et un pli central reste présent.

MUSIQUE

Initialement, la technique de la Moire Musique consistait à imprimer un motif pendant le processus de tissage, puis à le révéler lors du calandrage. Cette méthode a été réinventée et modernisée en intégrant un motif en Jacquard qui se mêle à la Moire Libre.

MYRIADE

La Moire Myriade est une variante de la Moire Tracée caractérisée par un petit rapport de Moire, tandis qu'un mouvement de Moire Libre se maintient en arrière-plan.

Moire fabric: Standing the Test of Time
